In this tutorial i will show you how to create segmented pipes in Gimp-2.8.1.
Create a new layer with these values

Color picker – fill layer
#5D5048

New transparent layer
Rectangle tool – Fixed - 10×50
Windows – dockable dialogs – navigation – zoom to 400%

Select the gradient tool in the toolbox and make sure our
foreground color is white and our background color is black.

Make sure fg to bg is selected and linear for gradient style or type.

Hold down the ctrl key and start the gradient just to the
left of the selection ending just to the right of the selection.
It should look like this.

Go to Edit>Stroke Selection and put in these values.

Go to Select>None
New layer -Conduit_Inner
Rectangle selection 7×45 to the right of the stroke edge.

Fill with black
Merge the top layer down
make it invisible
Create 2 guides one horizontal centered in the image and
one vertical centered.

Grab the circular selection tool from the tool box.
make a fixed selection 62×62 – make sure View>Snap to Guides is on.

Click on the image and snap the circular selection to the center of
your image.

Right click any layer and select new layer – name it circle guide
and stroke the selection by 1 pixel with black. Select>None

Place the circle guide layer under the Conduit layer and make the conduit
layer visible again.

Place the conduit segment you made just above the circle like so.Let it
snap to center.

Duplicate the top layer. Grab the Rotation Tool from the toolbox.

You need to type these 2 values in X and Y text areas. Make sure to hit Enter
to commit to the move of the point of origin.

Rotate the segment until it looks something like this. About 13 degrees.

Repeat this about 14 times making sure to duplicate the ORIGINAL Conduit layer
and rotating it each time.Do NOT duplicate the duplicated layers and rotate them.
Always duplicate the original for quality.
When you are done you have something that looks like this.

Make the circle guide and background layers invisible.
Right click any layer and select new from visible.Place the visible layer on top.
Make all layers invisible except the top and bottom layers.

Create a new layer and name it shadows.
Right click the visible layer and select alpha to selection.
Select the shadows layer.
Using a soft 32-35 pixel circle brush. Paint just outside the pipe selection and on the inside like this.Make sure Dynamics is set to OFF!

That gives us our kind of 3-D look so it pops out.
make a new layer and call this layer hi-lites
Change the fg color to white.
Use a size 18-20 circle soft brush paint on the inside of the pipe like this.

Set the layer hi-lites mode to overlay.Play with the opacity.I set
mine about 75.0. Now select the layer named “Visible”.
Go to Filters>Noise>HSV noise and set the value to 40

Thats it!
I will be doing the connectors tutorial next.
